Barbora Krejcikova Wins Wimbledon Title

Krejcikova Defeats Paolini in Thrilling Final

Barbora Krejcikova held off a charge from Jasmine Paolini in a gripping final at Wimbledon to claim her second Grand Slam singles title. The Czech player, who also won the French Open in 2021, was too strong for the Italian on Centre Court, winning 6-2, 6-2 in just under an hour and a half.

Krejcikova Weeps for Mentor Novotna

At the end of her turnaround semi-final triumph over hot favourite Elena Rybakina Krejcikova wept for her beloved mentor Jana Novotna. Novotna, who won Wimbledon in 1998, died of cancer in 2017. Krejcikova said that she was thinking about Novotna throughout the tournament and that her win was a tribute to her.

Krejcikova's victory is a great story for Czech tennis. The 26-year-old is the first Czech woman to win Wimbledon since Petra Kvitova in 2014. She is also the first Czech player, male or female, to win multiple Grand Slam singles titles since Ivan Lendl in the 1980s.
