National Flag

The official flag of Taiwan is red with a blue canton which has a white sun and twelve triangular rays. In Chinese it is described as a "wholly red earth, white sun and blue sky" flag.

History

The flag was adopted in 1928 and is also known as the "Blue Sky, White Sun, and a Wholly Red Earth" flag. The design is based on the flag of the Kuomintang, the ruling party of the Republic of China from 1928 to 1949.

The red field represents the blood of the martyrs who died in the Xinhai Revolution, which overthrew the Qing dynasty and established the Republic of China in 1911. The blue canton represents the sky, and the white sun represents the sun. The twelve rays represent the twelve months of the year.
