Early Life and Marriage

Eleanor Twitchell was born on March 6, 1904, in Chicago, Illinois. She was the daughter of a wealthy businessman. Eleanor met Lou Gehrig in 1923, while he was playing for the New York Yankees. They were married two years later, on June 25, 1925.

Life with Lou Gehrig

Eleanor and Lou were married for eight years, until Lou's death in 1941 from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a progressive neurological disease. During their marriage, Eleanor was a devoted wife and supportive partner. She traveled with Lou to all of his games and was always there for him, both on and off the field.

Later Life and Legacy

After Lou's death, Eleanor remarried twice. She was also a successful philanthropist and socialite. Eleanor was a founding member of the ALS Association and was active in many other charities. She died on February 25, 1984, at the age of 79.
